Genetics
Our Dogs are built from the inside out—with genetic foundations intentionally crafted over decades – that support strength, resilience, and compatibility
for real-world Protection and family life.
Why Genetics Matter in Protection Dogs
When it comes to working dogs, genetics are the foundation upon which everything else is built. Genetics hold the keys to Health, which is the most important consideration, and High Performance. Unlike typical companion dogs, Protection Dogs must be able to perform under pressure, remain emotionally stable, and respond to real-world threats with control—not confusion.
These levels of Performance begin long before training. They start in the bloodline.
At AlpinHaus, we’ve spent years carefully studying and sourcing the most promising working dogs across Europe—evaluating their genetic makeups, breeding history, drive expressions, and suitability for the modern home. The goal: to identify dogs that are not just powerful, ultra-healthy Olympians, but also balanced and stable.

The AlpinHaus Approach to Genetics
Building on his genetic foundation, here is 14 week old FCI Dutch Shepherd Ultrexx des Crocs d’Eben. With his great grandfather on both the maternal and the paternal sides of his pedigree being the ultra-famous Rudie Pegge and all the dogs in-between being highly accomplished FCI French Ring and Police Dogs,
Ultrexx has the genetics to perform at this young age under the massive stress and distraction of uncertain terrain beneath him and gunfire around him. It is upon this foundation that we build him for his future in dealing with pressure and dynamic environments, by giving him the experience needed to handle it all effectively.
Additionally, although his genetic composition is not too intense or hard-core for family life, a tremendous amount of the development we will do with him will be ensuring that he is social, happy and balanced as a loving companion.

Understanding the Lines: FCI vs. KNPV Dutch Shepherds & BELGIAN MALINOIS
We specialize in the two most capable and intelligent working breeds in the world: Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Malinois.
Each Dog is selected from the most elite European bloodlines fully screened for health, temperament and proven performance.

FCI Shepherds
FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are purebred, pedigreed, and typically selected for sport. These dogs are often used in French Ring, Mondioring, and IGP, or appreciated for their beauty and structure. They are more expensive and typically more refined in appearance. But they can also be used very effectively as working dogs in police and military roles as well.
We prioritize FCI lines when seeking high-drive dogs with stable dispositions that are compatible with family life.

KNPV Shepherds
KNPV (Royal Dutch Police Dog Association) lines are bred for raw power, aggression, and extreme working ability. These dogs are sometimes outcrossed with other breeds to maximize size, stamina, and fight drive. They are built for street-level military and police work— not intended for casual ownership or dog sports.
KNPV lines are intense, powerful, and not typically family-compatible—but some can cross into FCI standards depending on conformation and temperament.
Beyond Genetics: Training That Transforms
In the end, although we have as our genetic target the perfect balance point between Performance and Family-Compatibility for each Dog, the reality is that most of the time each Dog will veer to one side or the other of this balance point.
And this becomes one of the points in which we shine – because we understand how to dial up, or dial down, the genetics of our Dogs with the appropriate training such that we can, in the end, create the Dog that our Clients are truly seeking and want:
High-Performance and socially-stable.
To accomplish this requires a very deep and profound understanding of Dogs. An understanding that no other Protection Dog trainers have. Which is why they are unable to achieve the same results that we can, and are left to merely working with, and being constrained by, the genetics that their dogs natively possess.

Frequently Asked Questions
Overview of what you need to know about genetics in our Personal Protection Dogs.
What’s the difference between FCI and KNPV Dutch Shepherds?
To oversimplify it – FCI Dutch Shepherds are purebred and registered, often bred for a combination of work, sport work, structure, and temperament. KNPV Dutch Shepherds are bred primarily for police and military work, with a focus on performance, drive, and resilience—they were never bred nor intended for the public at large. FCI lines tend to be better suited for family protection roles.
Can a dog’s genetics limit its ability to be trained for protection?
Yes, genetics set the foundation for what’s possible. However, at AlpinHaus, we specialize in enhancing and optimizing a Dog’s potential through sophisticated training, allowing us to work around certain genetic limitations that others cannot overcome.
Are KNPV dogs too aggressive for family homes?
Generally, yes—most KNPV Dutch Shepherds are bred for extreme working drive and intensity, making them unsuitable for casual or family environments. However, certain individuals within the KNPV lines can be compatible.
Do you only work with Dutch Shepherds?
No. We also work extensively with Belgian Malinois—selecting each Dog based on their genetic suitability, drive balance, and ability to integrate into a family or personal protection setting. Note that Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are very similar Dogs, and in many ways the exact same but with different coat colors.
